Cannibalisation

Summary
Copy link

Compares a layer of existing sites with a layer of proposed new ones. Each reachable H3 cell is reached by existing sites only, new sites only, or both: a cell both reach is cannibalised, and a cell only the new sites reach is new market.

The tool sends one /h3 search per location. If any of them fails, the whole run fails, whatever the Robust Mode setting: a missing location would make the answer wrong rather than smaller.

A polygon layer with one row per reachable cell:

FieldDescription
h3_idThe H3 cell ID
coverageexisting only, new only or cannibalised
existing_sites / new_sitesHow many sites of each layer reach the cell
existing_ids / new_idsWhich sites they are, as a readable list of up to 250 characters, ending +N more when it doesn't fit. Use existing_sites / new_sites for counting.

The Output Summary Table has one row per site in either layer:

FieldDescription
siteThe ID of the site the row is about
roleexisting or new
cells_reachedHow many cells the site reaches
cells_exclusiveCells no site of the other layer reaches: retained trade for an existing site, new market for a new one
cells_sharedCannibalised cells the site reaches. A cell reached by several sites counts once for each.

The run also reports the split between the three kinds of cell, and the cannibalised share of all cells.
